5 Tips for Developing New Leaders

Leading a modern business is going to take a new type of leadership.

Be Flexible

Being flexible might not be the first thing that springs to mind when considering how to develop new leaders. Flexibility is becoming a core component of a thriving working environment. The way we work is changing rapidly. The new leaders not only have to work in an office but more and more are having to come to grips with managing a global team or department, geographically dispersed around the world.

A new working environment requires new leadership. Work-life balance has somewhat given way to work-life harmony. People are struggling to manage the cross over between work and life. Flexibility combined with modern workplace tools, platforms, and systems is vital in leading an organisation.

Develop mentoring programs for leaders

If you are coaching a pro athlete or managing the latest rising sports star, many people are involved. All too often, people limit the opportunity of developing the new leader by not fully realising the benefits of a supported approach to mentoring, internally and externally.

Education counts

Often the more you can invest in education for new leaders, the better. People can be resistant to investing in education programs in case someone leaves the company, and the return on the investment may not become fully achieved. Developing a learning program is of real value to people. You can be surprised at how much this improves many areas of the company.

Develop people at all levels

Many organisations identify people for leadership roles, using tools, interviews, external hires, feedback, and day to day performance. It is good to remember to look for new leaders throughout the company. Establishing a culture where people feel appreciated and where they feel that they are growing and developing their skills, experience, and career can deliver additional successful outcomes.

Take your time

Organisational successes can take time; leaders are tough to build in a few days or weeks.  It takes time to identify and develop new leaders. If you are committed to doing what it takes to create new leaders, it can help improve employee engagement at all levels.

Having good leaders in the business at multiple levels improves the whole culture can positively impact the company's bottom line.
