Being a Freelancer Isn't Easy, Explore The Truth with Úna Herlihy Ep 258 – The Global Discussion

Úna Herlihy, Founder & CEO and Chief Matchmaker at The Indie List, speaks with Host Simon Hodgkins in this episode of The Global Discussion. Based in Ireland, Úna built Ireland's leading curated freelance network for marketing and creative talent, bridging experienced professionals with purposeful clients through thoughtful matchmaking.

From Agency Account Handler to Freelancer to Matchmaker

Úna's journey began in traditional ad agencies like McCann, BBDO, and Coligny, working on major brands such as Coca‑Cola, Aer Lingus, and Diageo. She transitioned to freelance marketing consulting in 2005 to achieve more flexibility and agency over her career. Although few account handlers freelanced at the time, Úna embraced the challenge and hustled through the "school of hard knocks".

Building The Indie List in a Crisis

In March 2020, the pandemic wiped out Úna's freelance pipeline overnight. She launched The Indie List as a pro bono initiative to help fellow freelancers find work. Within weeks, and with back‑garden enthusiasm, it became a business, formally launching on July 4, 2020. Initial spreadsheets soon evolved into a platform of 1,600 vetted marketing and communications freelancers serving ~300 clients across sectors.

The Matchmaking Difference

Unlike gig marketplaces, The Indie List is a private, curated network. Úna and her team select 2–3 ideal candidates for a brief, based on industry credibility, attitude, skills, and logistics. Clients gain access to trusted, experienced professionals quickly; freelancers gain meaningful work opportunities; everyone wins.

Supporting Freelancers Holistically

Úna emphasizes that freelancing is rewarding but challenging. The Indie List's mission is to help members "earn, learn, and connect."

Responding to Evolving Skills & Future Needs

Úna highlights the accelerating rate of change in marketing and the need to help clients understand and plan future-proof skill sets. She's excited about the upcoming education and skills mapping services, which will support both freelancers and clients in adapting to future demands.
